Norolle Gelbvieh females and calves May 2016

BEGINNING

Clyde Johnson first saw Gelbvieh cattle in 1982 at Colorado State
University, when in the USA with veterinarian and friend Dr Peter McAuliffe.

The university team had done an ET program with a small herd of 32 Gelbvieh
females, which they retained at the University. Clyde was impressed with their
excellent milking and mothering ability combined with optimum carcase weight.

Later in 1982 semen to start the Norolle herd was sourced in Perth, WA.
It had been imported in 1974 from the Scottish Milk Marketing Board.

Scottish Herkules was one of two bulls in stock. He proved to be an excellent
foundation sire. Later Scottish Horst, MMB Hans and MMB Hock were used.

UPGRADING

Clyde started with the semen as a trial to breed station milkers, using it over Poll Herefords and Milking Shorthorns.

The priority in grading up was to breed cattle that can handle a harsh environment.

Clyde and daughters, Julie and Kirrily, developed the stud.  The then partnership, Norolle Pastoral Company, registered it.

They produced Australia’s first purebred (15/16) upgrade animals with a flush of four in November 1989, after a long upgrading program.

The great and rewarding progress continued using
imported sires and later homebred sires.

SHOWING & SELLING

Norolle’s displays at local shows made the public aware of Gelbvieh cattle.
In 1993 as a first time Gelbvieh exhibiter at the Brisbane Royal, Norolle showed
Junior Champion Female, Norolle High Society M600, born 3 February 1992.

Show successes followed year after year, with Championships at Sydney and
Brisbane Royals and Beef Rockhampton. These wins included Interbreed Champions at Brisbane in 1999 and 2001 and Supreme Gelbvieh Exhibit in Sydney in 2009 and again in 2010. See photos on News & Views page.

Although Norolle Cattle Company no longer exhibits at shows, Norolle bulls and females sell privately to satisfied new and repeat clients.

Norolle Cattle Company is proud of the stock produced, happy to represent the
Gelbvieh breed and very honoured when Clyde and Alison Johnson, in 2008, were granted Life Membership of the Australian Gelbvieh Asn Inc. for Services to the Breed.
